DBT Group
*Currently on hold*
What is DBT?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an effective treatment for people who struggle with intense emotions and relationship problems. It was developed in the late 1980's by psychologist Marsha M. Linehan to help better treat borderline personality disorder. Since its development, it has also been used for the treatment of various other mental health challenges.

How DBT Works:

There are three components to a DBT program:
1.) Individual Therapy
The client meets with a therapist once a week. The goal of these individual sessions will be to develop treatment goals that will aide in reducing and eliminating life-threatening behaviours (e.g., self-harm and suicide attempts) and other behaviours that affects the client’s overall quality of life(e.g., substance abuse; impulsive behaviours; mood and anxiety problems).
2.) DBT Group

Clients seeking DBT often do not have the required coping skills for managing intense emotions, behaviours and thinking patterns effectively. Therefore, an important aspect of DBT is acquiring these skills through attending the 12-week DBT Skills group.

During the DBT group, clients will learn coping skills in each of the following four areas:

-
Skills to control attention; gain better self-awareness and learn to stay in the present moment rather than be controlled by ones emotions.
-
Distress Tolerance: Skills to get through a crisis, and to manage extremely difficult emotions without engaging in destructive behaviours that make situations worse. These are skills to help you cope in the moment.
-
Emotion Regulation: These are long-term skills that will help manage the intensity of emotions over a period of time. It will help create less painful emotions and more positive emotions.
-
Interpersonal Effectiveness: Skills to strengthen the quality of your relationships, and to effectively handle interactions with others.
3.) Phone Coaching

Clients will have access to their therapist after-hours to offer support in-between sessions and help reinforce new skills learned. This service is only available to participants in the DBT Group.
